Owings Mills Kitchen Renovation

OWINGS MIILLS, Maryland

Capturing warmth and soul in equal measure.

This kitchen renovation in Baltimore County blends mid-century charm with modern performance, honoring the home’s original soul while introducing fresh design, lighting, and technology. The clients adored their 1959 kitchen—complete with fully functioning Thermador double ovens—but knew it was time for a thoughtful transformation. When the project began with necessary plumbing replacement under the slab, it quickly evolved into a full-scale renovation, offering an opportunity to reimagine the space from the ground up.

The goal was to bridge past and present, maintaining the home’s craftsman-meets-mid-century personality while embracing bold new elements. The result is a space that feels both nostalgic and renewed—eclectic yet cohesive, refined yet full of warmth. Stained cherry base cabinetry with applied molding pays homage to the home’s woodwork, while custom-painted slab wall cabinets tie the palette together. The original built-in bench, dining table, and chairs were preserved and reimagined with reupholstered cushions, seamlessly integrated to complement the new wood tones.

Lighting design played a defining role in balancing form and function. Above-cabinet LED tape accentuates the angled wood ceiling, while under-cabinet and in-cabinet illumination brings the dramatic quartzite countertops—an exotic Brazilian selection known as “The Snake”—to life. Controlled by a Lutron RadioRA 3 system with Sunnata keypads, every lighting zone enhances the materiality and mood of the space.

Performance meets artistry through a suite of professional-grade appliances, including a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Wolf wall oven, warming drawer, and microwave, as well as a Miele cooktop and vent hood. Finishing touches—like a Blanco granite composite sink in Anthracite, Moen Align faucet in Black Stainless, and brushed pewter hardware—add depth and continuity. A Robert Louis Tiffany art glass chandelier lends just the right amount of personality.

Design challenges became defining moments. A daring oversized checkerboard tile floor demanded precision to align through multiple rooms, while the unexpected quartzite selection pushed everyone out of their comfort zone in the best possible way. The result is a kitchen that feels authentically connected to the home’s history yet refreshingly original—a modern classic crafted to last.
