Baltimore Magazine Home & Design Awards: Inside Our Award-Winning Owings Mills Kitchen Renovation

We’re proud to share that our Owings Mills kitchen renovation has earned top honors for Best Mid-Century Modern Renovation in the Baltimore Magazine Home & Design Awards . The project will be featured in the magazine’s April 2026 issue.

What began as a necessary plumbing repair beneath the slab quickly evolved into something much larger—a full reimagining of a 1959 kitchen that the homeowners already loved. Rather than starting over, the vision centered on preserving the spirit of the original space while elevating its performance, materiality, and experience.

“From the beginning, it was about respecting what was already there,” says designer Ashley Frush. “The home had a soul to it. Our role was to bring that forward while introducing new layers—materials, lighting, and function—that feel completely at home within it.”

The result is a kitchen that balances nostalgia with clarity. Stained cherry base cabinetry with applied molding nods to the home’s original woodwork, while custom-painted slab wall cabinets introduce a clean, modern counterpoint. The existing built-in bench, dining table, and chairs were preserved and reimagined with new upholstery, seamlessly bridging past and present.

Material selections played a defining role in shaping the space. The quartzite countertops—an expressive Brazilian stone known as “The Snake”—became an unexpected focal point, pushing the design in a bold and rewarding direction. Under-cabinet, in-cabinet, and above-cabinet lighting work together to highlight its movement while enhancing the room’s overall atmosphere.

Lighting plays a central role in the experience of the space. Carefully layered and fully programmable, it shifts throughout the day to support both function and mood—accentuating architectural details like the angled wood ceiling while bringing warmth and dimension to every surface.

Performance was equally considered. A suite of professional-grade appliances, including Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Miele, integrates seamlessly into the design, ensuring the kitchen functions as beautifully as it looks.

Challenges along the way became defining features. The oversized checkerboard tile floor required meticulous planning and precision to align through adjoining spaces—an effort that ultimately reinforces the project’s sense of cohesion and craftsmanship.

The end result is a kitchen that feels authentic to its roots yet entirely renewed—a space that honors its history while embracing how people live today.

Celebrating Our Cover Feature in Kitchen & Bath Design News

We are honored to share that one of our recent projects has been featured on the cover of Kitchen & Bath Design News as part of their April feature, Next-Level Showers .

This issue explores how the modern shower has evolved beyond utility into something far more experiential. A place for restoration, efficiency, and daily ritual. Led by designer Stephanie Twarowski, the featured primary bathroom reflects a shift we are seeing across many of our projects. Clients are placing greater emphasis on the shower as the focal point of the space, prioritizing both performance and atmosphere.

A built-in bench and integrated niche introduce both function and warmth, while carefully considered lighting enhances depth, texture, and mood.

This project reflects a larger philosophy within our work. Luxury is not just about material selection, but about how a space supports the way you live. In this case, it is about transforming a daily routine into something intuitive, calming, and quietly indulgent.

Gramophone Design Build Honored with NKBA Innovative Showroom Award + Inside KBIS & The Future of Home

Earlier this month, our team had the privilege of attending the 2026 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Orlando, Florida, hosted by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). NKBA is the leading trade organization for the kitchen and bath industry, representing the designers, builders, and brands shaping how people live in their homes. Each year, at KBIS—the industry’s largest national show—they recognize projects that are pushing the industry forward.

We’re incredibly honored to share that our Hunt Valley showroom has been recognized with a 2026 Innovative Showroom Award in the Unique Showroom Application category.

To be included among those spaces and recognized with the Innovative Showroom Award is something we’re deeply grateful for. This category specifically recognizes non-traditional, highly interactive, or specialized showroom concepts that break from the conventional brick-and-mortar model and redefine what a modern showroom can be.

Why This One Matters to Us

This showroom represents more than a renovation. It’s a reflection of how we think, how we work, and what we believe great design should do. We set out to create something different. Not a place to display products, but a place to experience what’s possible.

Every space was designed as a complete environment. Kitchens, baths, and living areas that feel real. Materials that can be touched. Lighting that can be adjusted. Technology that can be felt, but not seen. The showroom immerses clients in a connected-living experience—demonstrating how lighting, audio, automation, and cabinetry work together to create cohesive, functional, and luxurious spaces.

Because the truth is, most people don’t fully understand the impact of lighting, integration, and thoughtful design until they experience it. This space was built to change that.

What Makes It Different

At the center of the showroom is the idea that design isn’t just visual, it’s experiential.

Our lighting lab allows you to see how color temperature and intensity transform materials and mood in real time. Layered lighting throughout the space shows how architecture comes to life when it’s properly illuminated. Integrated technology—audio, shading, control—is present in every vignette, but intentionally quiet, supporting the space rather than competing with it.

Across from these environments, our selection center creates space for collaboration, where materials can be reviewed, compared, and understood under the right light.

It’s all designed to help people not just imagine their home, but feel it.

We’re proud of this space because it was designed and built entirely by our team, from concept through completion, and because it reflects the level of care we bring to our clients’ homes.

Inside KBIS & What We're Seeing: The Future of the Home

Being at KBIS is always energizing. It’s a reminder of how much this industry continues to evolve and how many people are pushing it forward in thoughtful ways.

A few things that stood out to us this year:

Color is back —in appliances, cabinetry, and materials, used in more intentional and expressive ways
Materiality is getting richer —more texture, more depth, more emphasis on how things feel, not just how they look
Technology is designed to disappear —more integrated, more invisible, woven into every aspect of design and luxury living
Wellness continues to influence design —especially through lighting, water, and environmental control

One of the most valuable parts of KBIS is stepping back and looking at the bigger picture—how people are actually living, and how design is evolving to support that.

A presentation from NKBA’s research team reinforced something we’re seeing every day in our own work: the home is no longer being designed room by room, it’s being designed as a complete experience. Here are the big shifts we're seeing:

Homes are becoming deeply personal(ized)

There is no longer a “standard” solution. Clients want spaces that reflect who they are and how they live, whether that means designing around daily rituals, entertaining styles, or multigenerational needs. Personalization isn’t a luxury anymore, it’s the baseline. Lighting that shifts with your mood and time of day, personalized appliance settings, and shower presets for temperature and spray preferences. It's all in the details, making life simpler and more joyful.

Wellness is shaping design in quieter ways

It’s not just spa features or statement moments. Some of the most impactful wellness considerations are the least invisible. Light quality. Air quality. Acoustics. Water quality and filtration. Layout. Indoor-outdoor connections. The spaces that feel the best to live in are often the result of decisions you don’t immediately see, but experience every day. Homeowners want environments that support mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Because, why not? We all just want to live better and live happier.

Homes are working harder, and smarter

Spaces are becoming more flexible, more intentional, and more efficient. It’s less about adding square footage and more about designing smarter. Reducing clutter, integrating function, and allowing rooms to adapt to multiple uses throughout the day. The phrase "designed with intention" is everywhere . Read enough design magazines and editorials (like this), and you will see it. “Designed with intention” gets used a lot—but at its core, it means nothing is accidental . Lighting isn’t just placed, it’s planned to shape mood, highlight materials, and change throughout the day.

Technology isn’t added, it’s integrated to simplify life without being seen.

Materials aren’t chosen just for aesthetics, they’re selected for durability, texture, and how they perform over time.

Layouts aren’t standard, they’re tailored to routines, habits, and how the homeowner actually moves through the space.

So instead of design being decorative or trend-driven, it’s thoughtful, purposeful, and aligned with real life.

Technology is being woven into the home, designed to disappear

It’s no longer about adding more technology, but about integrating better technology in a way that feels effortless. Purpose-driven technology that simplifies everyday routines and makes life feel better, more comfortable, and more convenient. From lighting that transforms how a space looks and feels, to intelligent, wellness-driven features and fixtures, these systems are becoming more prevalent, but more invisible, more intuitive, and more embedded into the architecture itself. The result is a home that performs at a high level without ever feeling overly technical.

Designing for longevity, not just the moment

There’s a growing emphasis on homes that can evolve over time. Features that support comfort, accessibility, and ease of use are being integrated more thoughtfully, designed to feel seamless, not clinical.

Elegant & Understated Kitchen Remodel

A stunning kitchen remodel project for a family that loves cooking and wanted to transform their once dated and enclosed kitchen into a classic-looking and very functional space for their new home!

This exceptional kitchen remodel project belongs to a family that moved to the US from the UK, and was looking for their new and exciting American home! The house they bought had a beautiful structure but needed to be updated. The homeowner spent the first year decorating and painting, but when it came to the kitchen, they needed some outside assistance. The kitchen was very dated and both layout and size were not functional for the family’s wants and needs. As a family that loves to cook, the appliances also needed replacing as they were over 30 years old.

When looking for reputable design companies, the clients came across the Kitchen Design Center by Gramophone, and upon visiting the Showroom, they knew they were in the right place as soon as they saw photos of previous projects KDC had worked on. The designer listened to their needs and was enthusiastic in helping guide them to products to achieve the look and design they had envisioned. And that was the beginning of a very successful project!

Inspired by the neutral and classic interiors of their home country, the new design started with the removal of a wall and relocating an existing exterior entry. Previously, a wall divided the kitchen creating a secondary small unusable pantry area that the client had no use for. The removal of the wall created a much larger kitchen footprint and altered how the family now lives and uses the space. The existing exterior entry was then relocated to allow for an appliance feature wall. This new entry location also allowed for a revamp of the ‘boot room’ which serves as the main entry to the home for the clients.

During the initial consultations, it was evident that the old layout was not functional for this family. Not only was the space small and chopped up it didn’t include an island, which was very limiting for the clients as one of them particularly loves to cook. The addition of a large elegant island means it not only looks beautiful but is also a really sociable place for the whole family to spend time together. The clients further decided to add a TV and audio system to the kitchen design, adding that extra touch of entertainment that was missing before.

Our team here at KDC always strives to be educational and realistic about the construction process. We like to point out that during the installation phase, it is not a matter of “if” things go wrong but how we handle them when they do. During this particular installation process, it’s important to point out that the project faced some drawbacks with the flooring. The first product installed did not meet our team’s or the client’s standards. However, with the assistance of our flooring trade partner, the problem was immediately solved by re-selecting and re-installing a new product. The mantra ‘one team, one dream’ never made more sense!

As mentioned , the appliances were over 30 years old, and the clients opted for beautiful stainless steel by Subzero and Wolf. In particular, the Wolf cooktop features a teppanyaki module for extended cooking options. The Subzero refrigerator, while stunning on its own, has been built-in to create a seamless look with the cabinetry.

The final result is a contemporary kitchen with a classic twist that matches the style of their new home. Both in functionality and visual appeal, the new design is a win in the eyes of the clients(and our team), who are now happy to say: “Our house now has a kitchen that is the real heart of the home!”

Beautiful Contemporary Kitchen

A case study of a full kitchen remodel project, turning a once outdated and poorly lit space into a contemporary kitchen with beautiful and functional lighting design!

We were tasked with a full remodel project that required a complete makeover of a once poorly lit and outdated space. The client’s main request was to turn their traditional kitchen into a contemporary one, with a better lighting design and an overall more user-friendly space. Our clients also wanted upgraded appliances, using Wolf and Subzero stainless equipment for a cohesive look. And that’s where our designer started with the layout as these specialty appliances require specific-sized openings.

The designer changed the previous layout so that the cooktop was no longer squeezed into the dark and not too convenient corner. Now the range, which combines the previously separated cooktop and ovens, is in a better suited more user-friendly location. This new layout added much-needed brightness and fluidity to the cooking area of the kitchen.

At the heart of this beautiful kitchen, the large and stunning island with a gorgeous quartz countertop featuring a waterfall edge now has enough room to seat four people and ample space as a work zone - as well as added storage! Not only does the new island add more storage space, but so does the expansive pantry wall. The original storage pantry was replaced with a beautiful bank of cabinets and a modern beverage center. The designer made sure to add rollout shelves within the cabinets allowing access to the full depth of the unit- no more searching at the back of the cabinet! In every design, our team strives to mesh function with beauty so that every cabinet is tailored to each client's specific needs.

Once the layout was created our design team was able to tackle the next request the clients needed resolved - lighting. The lighting designer ensured that this space now feels light and airy using a combination of recess lighting and decorative pendants. How gorgeous! Every lighting layout is tailored to the space and the specific needs of the client. Using layers of light and a wealth of knowledge, our lighting designer created a well-lit space with lighting options that suit every situation. Be it entertaining, preparing meals, cleaning, or a romantic evening, the lighting options in this kitchen are top-notch.

The final touch is the flooring, featuring a glossy, oversized porcelain tile, creating an elegant and easy-to-maintain kitchen floor. With so few grout lines, the tile floor will look great for years to come with minimal effort.

A Professional Chef’s Dream Kitchen

A case study of a kitchen remodel project, creating a professional-level kitchen while maintaining the style you’d expect in a residential home.

Here at Kitchen Design Center by Gramophone , every project is unique and we embrace the challenges this often brings to create a space personal to our clients and tailored to their needs. We were recently called in by a professional Chef to assist in a kitchen build gone wrong. His needs as a Chef were discussed and the kitchen was designed to give a professional-level kitchen in a residential setting.

As a professional chef, our client had many specific needs in relation to the design and function of his kitchen. Although the kitchen needed to operate on a commercial level, our designers were also cognizant of delivering a design that was also beautiful.

All of the professional-grade appliances were supplied by our client, which our designer was able to incorporate into the kitchen’s design adding functionality, as a true Chef would appreciate.

The kitchen island is a big and important part of this project, housing a very functional stainless steel countertop, ideal for prep work, and the cooktop with ample space for serving. The rest of the kitchen space now has a beautiful Fantasy Brown Granite countertop, backsplash, and a stainless steel prep sink. By incorporating floor-to-ceiling cabinets and the addition of a library ladder our client gained loads of extra storage.

We were further able to bring the room together utilizing the existing hardwood floors exaggerating the contrast between the two-toned perimeter cabinets and a black island finished with a beautiful stainless steel countertop.

We know we succeeded when our Chef tells us how well his kitchen works for him in both form and function.

Timeless and Neutral Kitchen Remodel

A case study of this full kitchen renovation, with the removal of walls, and a whole new layout for the space!

The ORIGINAL LAYOUT of this kitchen was very segregated from the dining area and family living space because of unnecessary partitioning walls. So the main wish of our clients was the creation of a more open-plan kitchen with a better flow, and consequently, more natural light into the area.

The REMOVAL OF THE WALLS created a better family-orientated living space and allowed room for a large island with seating. Our lead designer also included a very long wall of cabinetry and a full-height backsplash, combining lifestyle shelving and cabinetry to the ceiling that ultimately added that extra depth to the kitchen.

We used a WOOD TONE on both the island and shelving that brought warmth and interest to a predominantly white kitchen while also leaving the space looking bright and airy with a sense of sophistication.

The HARDWARE was incorporated with a contemporary style in mind, using a stainless finish. The main faucet, the water filter faucet, and the COOKTOP KNOBS are great examples of how this finish was the perfect choice for this project. Extra attention to the high-end ‘flush’ mount cooktop appliance by Wolf, with cabinet-mounted front knobs that light when in use. Pull-out utensils and knife storages are a great way to store functional items close to where they are needed without taking up your valuable countertop space.

Coastal Vibes Home Entertaining Space

A case study for this stunning basement remodel project!

The scope of work for this basement remodel included remodeling of the media room, a home-office space, a dry bar, a utility room, and a gym area refresh, with a new layer of paint and other touches to bring the gym back to life.

The MEDIA ROOM embodied new flooring, an upgraded TV with surround sound - in-wall and in-ceiling speakers - a brand new installation of a fireplace, new built-in cabinetry and shelving for extra storage and decoration, and finished with wainscoting. Wainscoting is a great solution to add, not only an extra layer of protection on the walls but also to add a touch of design and personality to the space. This media room is now the family’s basement heart and the perfect place to enjoy some quality time.

The DRY BAR installation included new cabinetry, granite countertop, new flooring, and the absolutely stunning backsplash tile mural by Atlas Tile. The backsplash mural adds so much personality to the space, and at the same time, it is discrete and extremely elegant. Definitely, that extra touch of design that our clients very much loved it.

The HOME-OFFICE comprised new flooring and new cabinetry for both desk areas and countertops/desktops. It is a somewhat small space that was taken full advantage of to make the most of it, and the result is so satisfactory, with a cozy and bright space!

A workstation sink can have cutting boards integrated into it, a drawer that is actually another cutting board, and you can even have your whole sink “hole” covered by a combination of items that makes the whole process of cooking, much more convenient! We are proud to announce that CE Pro awarded this basement renovation Home of the Year: Best Media Room / Den / Multipurpose Room!

The clients are a young family who wanted us to help them create a new and renovated space from their existing finished basement, where the entire family could be together as well as entertain guests. They began their journey in our showroom confused about why they were standing in a lighting lab evaluating light fixtures. I recall the customer looking at me as if I misunderstood their desires for a newly renovated entertainment space/club basement. I think the first thing they thought we would look at was big screen TVs and speakers that would impress the kids and support large gatherings. Usually, we like to start with the problem spots and areas that most company's competencies fall short and that's where our advantages are found - we understand layered lighting, proper networking, along with a design flow that makes the experience of automation, home theater, and hosting gatherings based around a summer pool party or winter football game enjoyable and unique.

So how did we turn an existing finished basement come to life? We looked to our design professionals to provide us with a proper home for a Short Throw system that worked very well with the ambient light and with no need for a dungeon or enclosed theater that might make entertainment awkward for kids and friends. This budget-friendly solution allowed us to provide a large fixed screen of 100" that resembled a flat panel TV with a strikingly awesome picture. We coupled the 4K Hisense projection with a Marantz AVR, GoldenEar Surround Sound package, Salamander Design Short Throw cabinet, multiple zones of distributed audio, Sonance Outdoor Garden 8.1 Landscape solution, Ruckus Wifi upgrade throughout the whole home, Control 4 automation & lighting control.

The skilled craftsmanship of KDC and Gramophone's team was tasked with remodeling and transforming a dated basement into a beautifully transformed theater space, media room, wet bar, gaming zone, high-tech gym, and guest room. Our designer used their love of sports as a starting point for the overall choices in the design and finishes. It all began with a reference to Camden Yards baseball stadium where you'll most likely see brick, black metal, dark stained wood, and the color Green! Green actually became the perfect color for their cabinetry because it gave the right drama for the wet bar. We pulled in black metal in the faucet and bar lighting and added beautiful stained beams to create the definition of spaces. We also provided furnishings for these spaces that will withstand the use of an active family.

One big challenge that we faced on this project was opening the stairwell. The client wanted to have open sight lines from the gaming area through to the Media Room. Since we were not able to completely remove the wall at the bottom of the stairs, we cut back as much as possible, added a new structural beam and column to carry the load from the main level, and installed new stained and black metal handrails to allow for connectivity between the spaces. Even though we weren't able to remove the wall entirely, we provided the best solution possible and it turned out to be one of the client's favorite design elements.

Our customer was delighted to be able to entertain and enjoy on day one of our completion and is getting tremendous head turns from those who notice led lit shelves, layered lighting with high-quality fixtures programmed by scene, awesome sound, hidden wire management behind faux shiplap paneling, cozy reading nook, and well thought through interior design finishes. After all, anyone can buy a truckload of gear - it's what you do with it that makes a difference. Mission accomplished, simple, easy to use, impressive for gatherings, and supports all seasons indoors and out.

A Case Study for this impressive kitchen renovation!

We recently completed this gorgeous kitchen renovation project, all designed and installed by our incredible team at the Kitchen Design Center by Gramophone. The client made some fabulous choices and the result is there for everyone to see and get inspired by: a truly unique and stunning kitchen! So let’s dive in!

Before the renovation, when we first looked at the kitchen, it was clear that the space was already nice and the main issue is that it was a bit darker than the owner wanted, and also a bit dated, which is something that often happens. People change their lifestyles, they get older, their lives take a different path and their homes should be reflecting those changes as well. So our mission began with the main focus being to add more light to the space and make some adjustments in design and functionality. More than anything, the kitchen was just another in the world, with nothing that really highlighted the client’s personality and tastes.

Although the cabinetry was white, the kitchen was dark mainly due to the black granite countertop and the black flooring. With the green splashback combined with the dark silver hardware, appliances, and sink, and not ignoring the dated light fixture, we had a lot of work on our hands!

If you pay close attention, you’ll see that the space itself didn’t change much, as we kept the walls, island, and oven in the same position as before. These weren’t problems from a design and install perspective, and also because there were no complaints about it from the client.

We were so happy and excited when the client chose this beautiful and unique cabinetry color by Dura Supreme! It is definitely the highlight of this project as it gives the space not only a brighter vibe but also a modern flare! The floors were replaced by a much lig hter color, as well as the sink by Kohler which is now white. Extra attention to the gorgeous waterfall countertop! It is now in a much brighter quartz tone by Classic Granite & Marble and the splashback follows the same choice, creating a sense of unity and neatness. The design of the waterfall countertop is important in finishing off and bringing fluidity to this stunning kitchen!

The pot filler was another great addition! This item is very popular and was added mainly for functionality, but also to add style to the space, especially with the golden color that accompanies the faucet, both by Brizo® Kitchen & Bath. The space and design are tied with the light fixtures that follow the colors of the bronze hardware by Jeffrey Alexander Brands

The transformation is clear and now this kitchen is booming with light and personality! Definitely one of the prettiest kitchens we’ve had the pleasure of designing and installing! See all the photos of this project by clicking here !

Optimize restricted space and tricky layouts
Interior dimensions are finite, which can be difficult to deal with, but nothing fits like a design specific to the space. Well-designed built-ins allow homeowners to create abundant storage without leaving unusable, dead space. How to keep your cabinets look great

Well-made cabinets can last decades. How to keep cabinets looking new year after year is simple. Read on below for easy care and maintenance tips.

First Step : Use clean, dry, soft microfiber cloths to dust your cabinets. Microfiber cloths are lint-free thereby guarding against scratching the cabinet finish. Do not use abrasive cleansers or dry paper towels as they will mar the cabinet.

Second Step : Most times a lightly water-dampened cloth is all one needs to clean cabinets surfaces but occasionally a drop of mild dish soap solution may be in order. Just make sure to add a drop or two of mild soap to water then apply to the cloth, wringing out thoroughly to avoid excessive moisture before application to the surface. For dried food or beverage spills, clean gently with a damp cloth until the dried spill softens and cleans easily. Never use abrasive sponges or scrapers as this will scratch the finish over time.

Third Step : Dry promptly with another soft cloth.

Guidelines to the perfect kitchen remodel

As 2021 gets under way many homeowners are looking at ways to enhance the enjoyment in their homes. The heart of the home, the kitchen, is a great place to start. Kitchen remodeling can be a daunting task but taking the step to look at your current kitchen to assess the structure, functionality (what works, what doesn’t), and even lighting prior to getting paint color swatches can go a long way toward a successful remodel.

Questions to ask yourself:

Do I like the current appliance placement and arrangement?
Do I have a pantry? If so, is it conveniently located?
Does my kitchen have plenty of counter space or work area?
Do I have enough storage space for my dishware/pots and pans?
Do I have adequate storage for my countertop appliances?
Is there an island or space for sit-down eating?

NKBA Guidelines

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) publishes planning guidelines to help facilitate designs that are both functional and safe. Note these guidelines are not legal requirements. Below are 10 to get you started on the way to kitchen remodeling 101.

Countertop Space

A total of 158 inches of countertop frontage, 24 inches deep, with at least 15 inches of clearance above is needed to accommodate all uses.

K itchen Door Entry Openings

Doors should be 32 inches wide.

Universal Design is 34 inches wide.

Good rule is to have 36 inches wide if possible.

Kitchen Door Interference

Design the kitchen so appliance doors and regular doors don’t bump into one another.

Distance Between Work Centers

Work centers aka stove, sink/prep area and the refrigerator form a work triangle. Note the minimum and maximum distances.

S eparating Work Centers

A full-height, full-depth, tall obstacle should not separate two primary work centers.

W ork Aisle

Width of 42 inches for one cook and 48 inches for multiple cooks.

The work aisle is the measurement between the fronts of the countertops, tall cabinets and appliances.

W alkways

36 inches wide

If 2 walkways are perpendicular to each other, one walkway should be 42” wide.

C leanup/Prep and Sink Placement

In a kitchen with one sink, locate it adjacent to or across from the cooking surface and refrigerator.

T raffic Clearance for Seating

If there is no traffic behind diner, allow 32 inches from counter/table edge to wall or obstruction.

If traffic passes behind diner allow 36-44 inches from edge to obstruction or wall.

S eating Space

Minimum 24 inches wide for each diner

At a 30 inch high table/counter-18-in deep knee space for each diner

At 36 inch high table/counter allow 15 in deep clear knee space

At 42 inch height table/counter allow 12 inch deep knee space

As we transition from incandescent lamps to the new generation of LED lamps, many people are discovering that there are big differences between one lamp and another. One of the most common issues we see in homes are rooms that are lit from a single light source. Lighting should be thought of in layers.
There are three layers to consider - general or ambient lighting, accent lighting and task lighting. General lighting allows you to move around the home comfortably. Accent lighting creates focal points within a space. It can highlight artwork, collectibles, wall textures or other architectural accents. Task lighting provides additional light for specific tasks like cooking, reading or getting ready in the bathroom.

Don’t let lighting be an afterthought
In new construction, many times people overlook lighting because it either “comes with the house” or is already on the construction drawings. The lighting plan on the drawings or that comes with the house is really just to meet local construction codes so while it may provide for the basics, it won’t bring out the beauty in your home. Find out about smart lighting to keep your body's clock balanced

If you own an iPhone you may have seen a setting called “Night Shift”. Scientists have found that exposure to the backlight on phones, tablets and computers can disrupt our normal sleep cycles. Night shift mode changes the light from a blue tinged white light to a warmer, amber tinged light.

We are biologically attuned to follow the daily lighting cycles of the sun, starting with warm, soft light at sunrise, followed by a crisp, blue tinged, white light that energizes us during the middle of the day, followed by sunset with a soft, warm amber light that relaxes us and prepares us for bed. By spending so much time indoors in artificial light, and by using computers, tablets and mobile phones as much as we do, scientists are now seeing that many of us have sleep disorders and other issues caused by exposure to the “wrong” light at the wrong time of day.

The good news is there are solutions at hand. A few very advanced companies have been developing “circadian” lighting, designed to keep the body’s clock aligned with the daily cycle of the sun by emitting crisp, bluish light during the day that suppresses the chemicals that our brains produce to trigger sleep. As evening approaches, the system adjusts from the mid-day light to a warm amber light, encouraging the production of melatonin and leading to a natural sleep cycle.
